The theme of this essay is not so much Marx himself as socio-cultural and intellectual situation which has developed over twenty years of systemic transformation and which has had a substantial impact on the ways of reading the author of Capital. In our culture Marx is no longer a theorist whose work is essential for understanding the social world. Instead, in the mass imagination he has become a monster figure. I refer to some of the ways of reading Marx and try to explain them in the Marx’s manner: through a specific attempt to clarify and operationalize the category of intelligentsia as a class of servants. I use this discussion not only to describe the situation but also to situate it within the field of sociology of knowledge and epistemology.
