The aim of this study is to justify a partial shift from the biographical approach in the author’s ongoing research into the work of architect Vladimír Karfík’s, especially if that research is directed towards raising present-day appreciation of his output. The inspiration comes from pragmatic aesthetics, as understood by philosopher Richard Shusterman, which considers the possibility of appreciating a work of art and architecture without the premise of one universal truth. The “net of interpretations” metaphor suggests that different interpretative lines can be perceived as equivalent in all their diversity, and there is no single “true” image of the work that lies underneath. The proposition of the study is argued both on a theoretical level and through the analysis of existing publications devoted to Karfík’s work and personality.

This study aims to uncover the background of a former key industrial zone of Bratislava that was developed not only in proximity to the Danube, but also relatively close to the historical centre. It was flood area at the time, considered peripheral with an unfavourable reputation, separated by railway lines from the city, with winds blowing southeast – away from populated areas – thus making it a seemingly ideal place for industry. However, a current perspective – when just a fraction of historical buildings remain, and are surrounded by new high-rise structures, and with society familiar with industrial contamination – offers an opportunity to look more closely at past planning processes, as they might be more relevant to present-day decision-making than we might have thought.

The industrial architecture of the 19th and 20th century offers various ways in which it can be studied from the point of view of modern architectural history. In the same time, this notion is shared just by a small number of experts – historians, architects or art historians – and the subject of industrial heritage stays to a large extent a domain of civic activism. The growing interest of civic associations is driven by an outrage of rapid demolition of a number of key historical industrial sites in Bratislava in the recent past. In the contrast to the public interest, the expert research of industrial heritage might seem as less effective and understandable. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of existing expert research in a connection with interdisciplinary methods that are not yet developed sufficiently. The interdisciplinary team-work has to be done both on the level of official state heritage protection policies and civic activism, as it is confirmed also via contemporary international heritage discourse.
