The author focuses on the problem of water management in the selected areas and the most adequate, appropriate, relative SUDS solutions for the places in question. The spaces were chosen from the area which was regarded as the most problematic in ’The Local Revitalisation Program for Zamość for the period 2017 to 2023’. Justification for the chosen solutions is based on the geological conditions of the terrain, the existing stormwater management system , the extent of paved surfaces and the quality and quantity of plant cover. Proposed solutions were analysed in the spotlight of permaculture principles. The aim of the paper is to raise awareness of the concepts of SUDS and Permaculture as they complement each other and offer pro-ecological approach to water.

Today’s city longs for air and green. Congestion, overflow of car traffic, the pace and randomness of contemporary living might serve as plights for the spaces around us since one might observe accruing amounts of waste produced by humans, pollution or disorganization/ inconsistency/ incongruity of public spaces. Quite threatening might that be, but there has been observed a ‘trickling’, continuous shift of a social life towards virtual reality of tempting, alluring social media, games, news on-and-on broadcasts, shopping websites. We engage in perversely intimate relation with our ‘cuddle-to’ electronic devices – phones, laptops, smartphones. Little Prince would not be happy with ‘our establishing ties’ with lifeless machines, would he? Getting children out of their computers to kick some ball or play hide-and-seek turns into changing the current of a river or tempering with a bee. It will definitely stab you. Can a historically charged, conservatory space be a no space?

The Town of Zamość is located in the south-eastern part of Poland and is the worldwide UNESCO Heritage fortress whose beginning dates back to the end of the 16th century. Built in cruda radice, the Zamość architectural value derives primarily from its unique, historical plan which remained the original compositional form envisioned by a brilliant, broad-minded, ambitious man of European Renaissance – Jan Zamoyski. Urban layout of the Town mimics the anthropomorphic distribution of key body parts encapsuled within the frame of the most up-to-date examples of ‘architectura militaris’ for those times. The smart spatial organization of space allowed not only for the flexible introduction of new functions in larger, urban scale but also the exposition of the intricate beauty of architectural ornamentation and detail of crucial representative buildings. Within the plethora of reverberating, classic examples of details there are also some which convey important, symbolic meaning which is very much connected to the history of the Town.

Zamość is a town of remarkable urban landscape and architecture. The first urban idea on the masterpiece of Italian-style fortification from the late 16th century evolved gradually throughout centuries until 19th century. The plan and examples of architectural pearls are stylistically homogenous. The fortifications underwent many transformations and 21st century brought some outstanding projects for the reconstruction of substantial amount of fortress elements. The Zamość Park retained the green parts of fortifications which added to its undoubted picturesqueness. The Zamość unique and valuable urban layout and architectural splendor call for creating suitable preservation and clear rules of management. Such tools can be achieved by forming a cultural park – mentioned in the Act on the Protection and Care of Monuments as one of the ways of protection of urban and architectural monuments. The term should not be confused with a notion of a park as an arrangement, composition of greenery on a particular terrain.

Wooden heritage of Polish towns has become a widely discussed architectural topic. Until the 2nd world war, the majority of little towns and villages development was constructed from wood. Zamość, well-known for its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List, may be pleased for having many examples of wooden residential architecture dating back to the beginnings of the 20th century. Stylistic traits, composition of forms, modest but classy ornamentation and the atmosphere of the street calls for adequate commemoration. Private ownership entailing infrequent poor maintenance, devastating weather conditions, lack of concrete, local government actions result in gradual deterioration of wooden building substance and its aesthetic, original qualities. Too little attention and effort is devoted by the local government to preserve that unique part of Zamość – the Zamość outside the fortification walls. The author of the article provides historical background of that particular pieces of wooden architecture, lists their main characteristics distinguishing and common to the Zamość region, discusses their role in the street’s landscape and presents several solutions to revive the original beauty of the place and engage attention to the matter.

Development of cities sprouts from human potential. By limiting, restricting access to public spaces for people of every age, perceptive or motoric ability, the prospects of fruitful, inspirational encounter, forging friendship or fall in love become downrightly limited. Sameness is stagnant. Diversity brings to a city constant movement. . Polish Language Dictionary defines “functionality” (“funkcjonalność”) as “useful, helpful, ergonomic, efficient” which in relation to public space design refers to sufficient space for approach and use, convenient dimensions, operational simplicity and precise purpose of the place. Cities such as Zamość, with clearly defined, planned urban structure, pose a great challenge to designers in terms of balancing innovative, practicable architectural facilities that would not interfere with historical substance of a world heritage monument. In other words, designing in a historical centre is like walking on thin ice with the risk of distorting the integrity and original outlook of the centre. Zamość is a unique example of a Renaissance town designed at the end of the 16 th century which retained its original urban/ communication layout, fortification system and a great amount of important buildings that combine both Italian and middle – European building practices.
