This paper describes work aimed at assessing main journal bearing wear in a spark ignition engine using vibration measurements. A large number of tests were run with varying sensor location, engine speed, oil viscosity and bearing wear simulated by machining away material from bearing surfaces. Results show that signal magnitude can be used to characterize bearing operation and wear. Engine speed and oil grade have effects on the signals obtained. In addition it is shown that weak parts of signals can be enhanced with the addition of noise of appropriate level. Random noise was added to vibration signals and noise of an appropriate level enhanced weak parts of accelerometer signals.

The effects of pulsed magnetic field on rolling contact bearings were determined in terms of differences in micro-hardness indentation lengths for thrust bearing run under no magnetic field and when run under a pulsed magnetic field. Micro-hardness measurements were made on the washer of the roller bearing-washer pair for washers in initial as-supplied condition, for washers treated with a pulsed magnetic field, for washers after operating in rolling contact bearings with no field applied and for washers from the bearings run under a pulsed magnetic field. Compared to initial condition washers, hardness test indentation length increased with magnetic treatment, decreased with rolling contact under no field and increased when bearing were run under a magnetic field. That is, in contrast to the expected observed increases in hardness of washers after running in thrust bearings, the hardness of the washers decreased when the bearings were run in a pulsed magnetic field.
