The village of Jankowka near Krakow offers a real opportunity for the re-integration of a historical manorial complex together with a Sezession-era garden. Already in the Middle Ages Jankowka included a pond, a mill, a tavern and a manorhouse. At the end of the fifteent century this was the property of Warzyniec (who bore the Gryf coat of arms). In the seventeenth century the manorhouse belonged to the Arian Morsztin family and was the scene of assault against the „Lutherans” conducted by their neighbours. In 1907 the manorhouse was purchased by Jozef Mehoffer who owned it up to 1917. During this time, he realised his project for a Sezession garden and painted a number of works featuring Jankowka. The terraced southern slope of the garden designed by J. Mehoffer led to a path which in the past was part of a „free royal highway”. The house itself was situated in the centre of a landscape configuration which to the south offered an extensive view of the Beskid Wysoki mountains and the sometimes discernible peak of Mt. Babia Gora. In the 1950s the larch manorhouse was pulled down with the consent of the Voivodeship Conservator of Historical Monuments. The extant fragments include vaulted stone cellars and steps, as well as the original lay of the land: outlines of the terraces, escarpments and garden paths as well as specimen of old linden, hornbeam, larch and birch trees; the building which contained the manorial kitchen and an adjoining outbuilding are untouched. A detailed inventory of the partially redesigned manorhouse is available. The manorial complex is registered in conservation records. The idea of re-integration appears to be fully justified considering the retention of certain elements and the historical and cultural merits of the site.
