The “Dictionary of Polish Orthodox terminology” contains an index of Greek equivalents in its structure. The process of selecting the Greek equivalents and assigning them to the appropriate Polish entries was difficult because of the number of Greek variants used in the Orthodox terminology, as well as the considerable amount of synonyms present in the Greek language, which is definitely the richest language in terms of history and theology. The article presents the role of semantic qualifiers in the process of selecting Greek equivalents, using selected examples of festive names.

„Słownik polskiej terminologii prawosławnej” zawiera w swojej strukturze indeks greckich odpowiedników. Proces ich doboru oraz przyporządkowania do odpowiednich haseł polskich był trudny ze względu na ilość wariantów języka greckiego stosowanych w terminologii prawosławnej, jak również znaczny zasób synonimów obecnych w tym, zdecydowanie najbogatszym historycznie i teologicznie języku. Artykuł przedstawia rolę kwalifikatorów znaczeniowych w procesie doboru odpowiedników greckich na wybranych przykładach nazw świątecznych.

Saint Porphyrios (Bairaktaris) of Kafsokalivia (1906-1991) is one of the most famous contemporary Greek saints. He belonged to one of the most respected in Orthodoxy category of holy Elders, that is, spiritual fathers endowed with the charism of clairvoyance. As an experienced spiritual director, he passed on his pedagogical thought, which focuses on the purpose of Christian life - divinization, the parent’s desire to become a saint and pass on holiness to his children not through discipline and pressure, but through God’s grace, which acts as a parent seeks to sanctify. The Elder opposed unequivocally selfishness, seeing excessive praise as the cause of the poor spiritual development of the child. He emphasized the need to obtain and pass on to the child the humility which he identified with the natural state of man and the necessary condition for obtaining God’s grace.

Święty Porfiriusz (Bairaktaris) z Kafsokaliwii (1906-1991) jest jednym z najbardziej znanych współczesnych świętych greckich. Należał do jednej z najbardziej szanowanych w prawosławiu kategorii świętych Starców, czyli ojców duchowych obdarzonych charyzmatem prozorliwości. Jako doświadczony kierownik duchowy przekazał swoją myśl pedagogiczną, która skupia się na celu życia chrześcijanina – przebóstwieniu, dążeniu rodzica do stania się świętym i przekazania świętości swoim dzieciom nie poprzez dyscyplinowanie i wywieranie presji, ale przez łaskę Bożą, która działa, gdy rodzic stara się uświęcić. Starzec przeciwstawiał się jednoznacznie egoizmowi, upatrując w nadmiernych pochwałach przyczyny złego rozwoju duchowego dziecka. Podkreślał potrzebę zdobycia i przekazania dziecku pokory, którą utożsamiał z naturalnym stanem człowieka i warunkiem koniecznym do zdobycia łaski Bożej.

The purpose of this study is to present the role of the Holy Fathers in the dialogue between the Orthodox and the Muslims. The first part of the article talks about the mission of St. Cyril in Baghdad Caliphate in historical perspective. It deals with his dialogue with Islam and presents an analysis of the arguments used by both sides. In the second part I talk about the dialogue of St. Gregory Palamas with Muslims in the context of the mission of Cyril, comparing the arguments of both fathers and their attitudes towards the dialogue with Islam. Finally, the theory of the “biblical roots of Europe” is addressed, drawing on the example of the above mentioned Holy Fathers. In the article some excerpts from Palamas’works are published in Polish for the first time.

The article presents the general principles of assigning to the entry words of the Dictionary of Polish Orthodox Terminology their Greek, Church Slavonic and English equivalents, points to problems resulting from differences in the scope of terminology in particular categories of headwords and their foreign-language equivalents, analyzes the problems and presents the methods of solving them, established in the course of work on the Dictionary, by using foreign-language equivalents of headwords’ synonyms. The article points to various sources and the lack of sources of some foreign-language equivalents to Orthodox terms presented in a Dictionary of Polish Orthodox Terminology.

Artykuł prezentuje ogólne zasady przypisywania wyrazom hasłowym Słownika polskiej terminologii prawosławnej ich greckich, cerkiewnosłowiańskich i angielskich odpowiedników, wskazuje na problemy wynikające z różnic w zakresach terminologii w poszczególnych kategoriach wyrazów hasłowych i ich obcojęzycznych odpowiedników, analizuje zaistniałe problemy i prezentuje ustalane w toku prac nad Słownikiem sposoby ich rozwiązywania przy użyciu obcojęzycznych odpowiedników synonimów wyrazów hasłowych. Artykuł wskazuje na zróżnicowane źródła i brak źródeł niektórych obcojęzycznych odpowiedników terminów prezentowanych w Słowniku polskiej terminologii prawosławnej.
