The paper presents results for the 137Cs, 90Sr, 40K activity concentrations and 228Th/232Th, 230Th/232Th activity ratios in several samples needles from two Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees and two soil samples collected in the Tatra Mountains (Poland) area. Activities for artificial 137Cs and 90Sr show moderate values. Statistically different values were found between the mean concentration of 90Sr and 137Cs in current (C) and two years old (C+2) needles of the first tree, whereas for potassium no significant difference was observed. For the second, fallen tree, no significant difference between the mean activity concentration in needles for C+1 and C+2 was found for each radionuclide, but much lower levels of 137Cs contamination were observed. Observed values of the aggregation coefficients for 137Cs and 90Sr are presented.

The paper presents the results of alpha spectrometric measurements of 228Th/232Th and 230Th/232Th activity ratios for many samples of some living species analyzed within last years in our laboratory within different projects. The results were compared with typical values for soil or other non-biological samples. All results were obtained by means of alpha spectrometry.

This paper presents results of application of a sequential radiochemical procedure for multi-elemental analyses for samples collected in the Arctic environment. The levels of activity of 238Pu, 239+240Pu, 241Am, 90Sr and the content of natural radioisotopes (238U, 234U and 232Th, 230Th) were investigated in soils and peats in the proglacial zone of the Werenskiold glacier and on the strandflat in the vicinity of the glacier. Results on activity concentration shows general low level of radioactive contamination. Procedure was checked using reference materials. Reasonable recoveries were obtained for almost all analyzed radionuclides except for uranium. Further work is needed to improve this stage.

This paper presents the results of determination of artificial 137Cs and natural 40K activity concentrations in plants (bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and moss (Polytrichum commune)) and in soil samples from two main Tatra Valleys; Kościeliska and Rybi Potok Valley. The data were obtained during two years (2001- 02). These plants are known a as good bio-monitors for radioceasium [1,2 ]. It is known that 137Cs and 40K isotopes play important roles in the environment, due to their good assimilation by plants. The transfer of these elements from soil to plant depends of many factors: type of soil, organic matter contents, pH, type of plants. In this paper some results concerning the transfer of 137 Cs and 40K isotopes from various types of Tatra soil to moss or bilberry are shown.
