Flora and vegetation of nature reserve “Bór na Czerwonem” in the Kotlina Orawsko Nowotarska Basin (Western Carpathians). Fragmenta Floristica et Geobotanica Polonica 10: 67–91. Kraków. PL ISSN 1640 629X. ABSTRACT: The paper presents results of geobotanical studies on the “Bór na Czerwonem” nature reserve situated in the Kotlina Orawsko Nowotarska basin (Western Carpathians, S Poland) at an altitude of 609–622 m a.s.l., on fluvioglacial talus of the Tatra Mts origin. A considerable part (45 ha) of the reserve constitutes a raised peat bog. During research, 10 plant associations were distinguished (using Braun Blanquet method). The most interesting of them are: Pino × rhaeticae Sphagnetum of the raised bog and Calamagrostio villosae Pinetum of the neighbouring forest.

A lectotype of the name Ramonda serbica Panč. is designated from Pančić’s specimens held in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest (BP) and illustrated.

Galium sect. Leptogalium Lange in NE Europe is represented by few, local endemic species which occur in the area covered by the continental ice sheet in the Pleistocene period. They are: G. cracoviense Ehrend. in S Poland, G. oelandicum (Sterner & Hyl.) Ehrend. in SE Sweden and G. sudeticum Tausch in SW Poland and N Czech Republic. 55 individuals from five populations of these species were analysed using AFLP markers. A total of 193 AFLP bands were detected using three combinations of primers; out of them 159 proved polymorphic (82.4%). The lowest values of Shannon's index and Nei's gene diversity were noted for G. oelandicum and the highest ones for G. sudeticum. The results indicate a relatively high level of genetic variability in each of endemic species in spite of that the studied species occupy very small areas and are represented by a low number of populations. We conclude that additional, demographic and genetic studies are necessary to monitor potential decrease of populations' size resulting mainly from the mechanical destruction of plants and their habitats caused by intense tourism or other human activities (as agriculture, e.g. grazing).

The authors report the first discovery of diploid populations of Hieracium naegelianum Panè. subsp. naegelianum and H. naegelianum subsp. ljubotenicum Behr & Zahn., and give the first chromosome counts for H. cernuum Friv., H. gymnocephalum Griseb. ex Pant., H. sparsum Friv., Pilosella pavichii (Heuff.) Holub and P. serbica (F. W. Schultz & Schultz-Bip.) Szeląg from Macedonia and/or Montenegro. A diploid chromosome count for Hieracium renatae Szeląg is confirmed based on material from the whole distribution range of the species. An emasculation experiment showed that all the analyzed diploid Hieracium taxa reproduce sexually.

Chromosome numbers for 12 Hieracium s.str. species from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania and Serbia are given and their metaphase plates are illustrated. Chromosome numbers are published for the first time for H. albinum Fries 2n=4x=36, H. bukovicae Rohlena & Zahn; 2n=3x=27, H. retyezatense subsp. subatratiforme Neičeff & Zahn 2n=4x=36, H. velenovskyi Freyn 2n=3x=27, as well as two undescribed species belonging to the H. bohatschianum agg. 2n=4x=36 and H. nigrescens agg. 2n=4x=36 and a hybrid between H. naegelianum Pančić and H. bifidum s.lat. 2n=4x=36.
