Alumina coatings were obtained by the atmospheric plasma spraying using Al2O3 nanopowders. The powders were injected into the anode zone of the torch. The microstructures and phase compositions of the coatings were determined by the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the higher the plasma torch power, the lower the surface roughness is. The as-sprayed coatings are composed of ?-Al2O3 and ?-Al2O3, while the original powders were composed of ?-Al2O3 and ?-Al2O3 phases. The amount of ?-Al2O3 in the coatings increases from 56.52% to 100% if the plasma torch power is increased from 3.2 kW to 4.5 kW.

An experimental linear direct current (DC) plasma generator, with stepped anode, stabilized with air/water vapor, argon/water vapor and argon/air vortexes operating at atmospheric pressure had been designed and constructed in Plasma Processing Laboratory at Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI, Kaunas). It was designed specially the innovative and environment-friendly plasma treatment of organic materials. Three different types of gas stabilization in plasma generator were experimentally investigated and their thermal and electrical characteristics were compared.
