Purpose: Purpose of this paper is to study the role and benefits of third party auditing in ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems which have been implemented. The review looks through the perspective of case studies from both manufacturing and service organizations. To enable the reader to understand the role of auditing the paper firstly explains the key principles relating to auditing quality management systems, the global trends relating to their implementation as well as third party auditing. Then the paper presents four short case studies relating to a hospital, ceramic tile manufacturer, a heat distribution organization and a gas equipment installation company – describing the benefits of third party auditing of their Quality Management Systems. Design/methodology/approach: Used for the case study materials included the review of freely available case studies in the internet and through interviews of Senior Managers from the aforementioned Organisations. Findings: Third party Quality Management Systems Auditing continue to be beneficial in a range of industry sectors and are still growing on a global basis. Research limitations/implications: The study constitiutes a indication for other organizations to undertake introduction and certification of the management system based on ISO 9001. Originality/value: The article presents representative values in third party audit processes, demonstrates results which may be used in the analysis of ISO 9001 implementation systems.

Cel pracy: W artykule przedstawiono aktualne poglądy dotyczące architektury obiektów ochrony zdrowia i jej wpływu na jakość usług medycznych, szczególnie w zakresie lecznictwa psychiatrycznego. Metodyka: Dokonano przeglądu literatury z zakresu analizowanego tematu. Przedstawiono aktualne dane zwarte w Evidence Base Design (EBD). Wnioski: W organizacji ochrony zdrowia należy wziąć pod uwagę wpływ architektury obiektów na jakość usługi medycznej. Korzyści z zastosowania EBD przekładają się na zaprojektowanie przyjaznego terapeutycznego środowiska, jak również mają wymiar ekonomiczny. Skrócenie czasu pobytu pacjenta w szpitalu, zmniejszenie liczby zakażeń wewnątrzszpitalnych, a także podniesienie efektywności pracy personelu i redukcja błędów znacząco obniżają koszty funkcjonowania jednostki medycznej.

Aim of the study: The article presents current views on the architecture of health care facilities and its impact on the quality of medical services, particularly in the field of psychiatric services. Methodology: A review of the literature in the field of the analyzed topic. Current Evidence Base Design (EBD) data are presented. Conclusions: In the health care organization, the impact of object architecture on the quality of health service should be taken into account. The benefits of using EBD not only translate into creating a friendly therapeutic environment, but also have an economic dimension. Shortening the patient’s stay in the hospital, reducing the number of nosocomial infections, as well as increasing the efficiency of personnel work and reducing errors, significantly reduce the operating costs of the medical unit.

Content available remote Influence of manufacturing technology on tribological properties of A390.0 alloy

Purpose: In this paper, results of tribological studies on AlSi17Cu5Mg alloy subjected to a modification (CuP10) and a significant overheating above Tliq are presented, referring them to the starting material. Design/methodology/approach: The influence of the applied technologies on the refinement of the primary crystals of Si was defined by determination of stereological parameters. In case of the overheated alloy, the primary crystals of silicon assume the forms of polygons with sharp edges after the overheating. In practice, it results in a decrease in tribological properties and an increase in the coefficient of friction in relation to the alloy modified with phosphorus. Findings: The result show that all investigated properties were changed. Significant differences between the analyzed specimens were proved in the friction coefficient and in the wear rate of the tested friction connections. Research limitations/implications: The application of modified by CuP10 aluminum alloy allows to reduce the friction coefficient between tested surface and counter-samples and also reduce the wear rate. This property’s causes that this material can be used in many applications where the aim is to reduce friction coefficient and wear rate. Practical implications: Reducing of friction coefficient and increase wear resistance causes that these materials can be used in many applications in the automotive industry such as blocks of engines, cylinders etc. Originality/value: Influence of aluminium modification on chosen tribological properties have been investigated.

The aim of this article is to show the use of the analysis of the failure causes and effects as a prevention tool in controlling the quality of a given production process in the company. The scope of the work covers an analysis of a selected process, definition of inconsistencies present in this process, and then the FMEA analysis. In the production company one should implement thinking and actions based on the so-called ‘quality loop’ – it is an interdependence model of the undertaken actions which affect the quality shaping. It is carried out from the possibility for identifying a customer’s requirements through a project, production process, up to the assessment of effective capability for meeting the defined requirements. The application of such an approach enables to take the actions improving the operation of quality management in a systemic way.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to compare the European and Brazilian approaches employed on the design for ecological management & product sustainability based both on the Polish and the Brazilian experiences on this field. to provide practice for environmental management on management of the design manufacturing activities. Design/methodology/approach: This work aims to present and compare two major EMS - Environmental Management Systems: The system ISO 14001 and the EMAS - Eco-Management & Audit Scheme. Findings: According to the principles of environmental management systems, continuous improvement is necessary for all processes and technology companies wishing to implement the EMS. Practical implications: The implementation of environmental management systems (ISO 14001 when both EMAS) provides a number of benefits to organizations, such as maximizing the efficient use of resources, waste reduction, demonstration of good corporate image, environmental awareness of employees, gains in understanding the impacts, environmental impacts of business activities and increased profitability through improved environmental performance. Originality/value: The paper presents the analysis of environmental management concept in two different cultural and economic systems

Purpose: The conducted tests were aimed at determining whether the tested material meets the requirements for wear resistance in modern turbocharged combustion engines where there is an increased temperature and higher pressure. Design/methodology/approach: The tests were performed in a pin-on-disc system, according to the ASTM G 99 standard. Findings: The article presents the results of the coefficient of friction, the amount of wear, chemical analysis and surface profile of the tested material A390.0 in combination with EN GJL-350 cast iron. Research limitations/implications: The tested materials are used in the construction of pistons for internal combustion engines, therefore the test parameters were selected to take into account the operating conditions in a turbocharged engine with a power of up to 100 kW. Practical implications: After analysing the properties of the A390.0 alloy at elevated temperatures, it was found that without additional modifications, the alloy cannot be used in modern combustion engines, in particular with turbocharging. Originality/value: Presents the results of research concerning mechanical properties (HB, HV, Rm) and yield properties (R0.2, A5, Z) of the examined alloy.

Content available remote Visualisation of ankle injury using a thermal imaging camera

Purpose: This paper is dedicated to the study of the impact of multiple ankle injuries on blood flow in the lower limb. Design/methodology/approach: The study was performed using a thermal imaging camera which by differentiating temperature between the uninjured and injured leg enabled checking and comparing blood flow between both limbs. Findings: The patient subjected to the examination had suffered multiple ankle injuries. The images were taken before and after rehabilitation procedures so as to compare the temperature. Research limitations/implications: By using thermal imaging, the temperature differences within structures can be observed, which in turn attests to limited blood flow. Improper trophic might have had an influence on a slow recovery process. Practical implications: Analysis of image taken using a thermal imaging camera facilitates localizing damaged structures and planning the treatment process that aims at normalizing temperature differences between limbs. Moreover, the analysis of further images, taken during the treatment process enables us to evaluate the effectiveness of the selected method of treatment and to change the method if needed. The evaluation is entirely objective and it enables eliminating reliance on patient’s feedback, which is often subjective and unreliable. Originality/value: The study shows possibility of usage thermal imaging camera in traumatology.
