In this contribution the weld toe region is modelled as a sharp V-notch and the intensity of asymptotic stress distributions are quantified by means of generalised stress intensity factors. When the V-notch opening angle is constant, mode I NSIF is used to summarise the fatigue strength of welded joints. Otherwise, the synthesis is carried out on the basis of the mean value of the strain energy density over a well-definite volume surrounding the weld toe or the weld root.

In this paper, a non-local equivalent stress is calculated by solving a second order differential equation of implicit type. The solution is obtained assuming a linear elastic constitutive behaviour and two different definitions of the equivalent stress as failure criteria. The static failure loads of notched PMMA specimens predicted through the present criterion are compared with experimental results taken from the literature.
