This paper is concerned with a numerical solutions of two-component magnetohydrodynamic equations. While a hyperbolic system of wave equations admits a shock solution as a result of the selenoidality condition the MHD equations are not strictly hyperbolic. As a consequence of that these equations require special numerical treatment. An application of a resulting numerical code to a problem of solar wind interaction with the ionosphere of the planet Venus is presented.

A practical application of information theoretic criteria is presented in this paper. Eigenvalue decomposition of the signal correlation matrix based AIC, MDL and MIBS criteria are investigated and used for on line estimation of time varying parameters of harmonic signals in power systems.

Artykuł przedstawia kryteria i porównanie metod redukcji modelu procesu. Przedstawiono i porównano różne kryteria bazujące na dekompozycji macierzy korelacji według wartości własnych: AIC, MDL i MIBS. Porównania dokonano na sygnałach harmonicznych odpowiadających układowi niestacjonarnemu.

Sliding behavior of alpha/beta, beta/gamma and gamma/alpha interphase boundaries of diffusion couples produced by a solid to solid diffusion bonding was investigated using CuZnSn alloys. The detailed observations of slid interphase boundaries disclosed that the macroscopic sliding accompanied a local plastic deformation in the softer phase adjacent to the interphase boundaries and verified the model where the sliding occurred in a thin layer of the softer phase adjacent to interphase boundaries.

Here we describe a cardio-ventricular support system that combines a spiral vortex blood pump with an intra-aortic balloon pump driver. To reduce cost, we replaced the conventional ventricular assist driver with one used for an aortic balloon pump. We characterized the hydrodynamics of both drivers by recording pressure and flow waveforms during a single pulse for typical conditions of the pump. The pressure pulse of the ventricular assist driver was rectangular in shape, and the flow was maximal in the systolic fraction, when balanced conditions were achieved. By contrast, the triangle shaped pressure pulse of the balloon pump driver produced a constant volume. Flow increased in proportion to the rate of pulsation and drive volume. A minimum requirement set flow to 5 liters after 80 beats per minute. The balloon pump driver met the requirement with a 44 ml volume. Thus, the balloon pump driver effectively substituted for the ventricular assist driver. Our findings suggest that combining a spiral vortex pump with a balloon pump driver is cost-effective for left ventricular support during acute cardiac failure.

There are two types of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) anastomosis methods: the end-to-side anastomosis (ESAs) and the side-to-side anastomosis (SSAs). The choice of these methods is determined by the surgeon's favor because there is no evidence how to optimize. The ultimate objective of this study is to provide new methodology for the surgeons to enable them to choose the anastomosis methods through both in-vivo and invitro tests. The in-vivo tests were performed on pigs and the energy loss at the anastomosis ESAs and SSAs were compared. The in-vitro tests were conducted in the newly-developed system to evaluate CABG anastomosis methods. This system is composed of the mock circulatory system and the coronary simulator, which originally was designed to reproduce various types of the coronary hemodynamics. Both the in-vivo and the in-vitro tests showed a similar 'tendency of the energy loss: SSAs had a lower energy loss than ESAs under the same conditions. These effects were caused by the difference in the local flow at the anastomosis between ESAs and SSAs. Consequently, SSAs is believed to be an anastomosis method preferable to ESAs.

The aim of the present study was to compare carotenoid extracts of Rose hips (Rosa canina L.) with regard to their phytochemical profiles and their in vitro anti-Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), cytotoxic, multidrug resistance (MDR) reversal and radical scavenging activity. Carotenoid composition was investigated in the different fractionation of rose hips, using extraction methods. Six main carotenoids - epimers of neochrome, lutein, zeaxanthin, rubixanthin, lycopene, β,β-carotene - were identified from Rose hips by their chromatographic behavior and UV-visible spectra, which is in accordance with other studies on carotenoids in this plant material. The active principles in the carotenoid extract might differ, depending upon the extraction procedures.
