This text deals with the special characteristics of cultural animation. The first subject covered is the gap between institutional definitions of animators, as opposed to the superficial and commercial uses of the name, and finally the understanding of the role as defined by animators themselves. Furthermore, the author describes her understanding of the “animator” – in both cultural and social terms – and their role in inspiring changes in individual people and local groups. She also addresses the difficulty in registering the effects of their work in measurable ways that media and institutions understand. The author principally underlines the importance of awareness and restraint in the work of cultural animators.
