Recently a new product, named HunTeka has been introduced into the Hungarian library software market. Firstly the authors analyse the circumstances that gave reasons for the development of a new system on the overstocked market. After the introduction, the elements of the program system are presented according to the main modules of the system. Particular emphasis is laid on certain functions that are becoming more and more important nowadays, like high level support of the networking interoperability, distributed cataloguing, wide range application of the XML standards, or the chances of developing virtually common catalogues. The adoption of the OAI protocol in HunTeka is also emphasised, since this is the technical basis on which common searching interfaces can be developed for the databases of libraries, museums and archives, or even for partner institutions and providers outside the public cultural sector. Finally the authors come to the conclusion that it was worth launching the development of HunTeka, which is confirmed by the growing number of the libraries introducing the new service.
