The aim of this paper is to present a proposal of two-stage approach for determining dependencies between socio-economic aspects and migration phenomena and also to make an attempt to apply it in the analysis of internal migrations in Poland in 2004-2011. A construction of econometric gravity model using taxonomical measure has been presented. Significance, intensity and impact direction of selected socio-economic aspects on domes voivodeships are much more mobile territorially; a poor situation of a region is an impeding factor of migratory movement. Regional labour market situation constitutes a deciding reason of population inflow, while a standard of living plays a negligible role. Migration scope is relatively slight in Poland, significant population flows take place between neighbouring regions. Economic cycle affects an intensity of domestic population flows. During the period of prosperity the flows seem to be more dispersed and one-way in their nature, while in the period of economic crisis they stabilize and a group of destination regions is getting narrowed down.

The aim of this paper is to examine population migration flows in relation to the eastern Poland and its economic situation. The empirical study refers to the period 2008-2010 corresponding to global financial and economic crisis which affected the intensity and directions of internal migrations in Poland. Ratio analysis, as well as taxonomical analysis was applied in the research

The objective of the paper is to assess the situation of Polish regions (NUTS 2) and their progress in sustainable development regarding social inclusion. The study covers the period after Poland’s accession to the European Union (2004-2011). The implementation of ratio analysis and synthetic measure facilitated an evaluation of occurring tendencies. Taxonomic analysis was performed for the years 2006 and 2011. Linear arrangement methods and a common development pattern were applied in constructing the measure. The observed tendencies may be assessed as positive. All regions made progress towards the pattern even though the rate of occurring transformations was diversified. At the same time territorial disparities became smaller. Despite the recorded progress the situation in the country still requires to be improved. Among the most significant challenges encountered by Polish regions there are extensive income distribution inequalities, long-term unemployment, high percentage of population threatened with poverty and low participation of the disabled in the labour market.

The paper makes an attempt to apply local indicators for categorical data (LICD) in the spatial analysis of economic development. The first part discusses the tests which examine spatial autocorrelation for categorical data. The second part presents a two-stage empirical study covering 66 Polish NUTS 3 regions. Firstly, we identify classes of regions presenting different economic development levels using taxonomic methods of multivariate data analysis. Secondly, we apply a join-count test to examine spatial dependencies between regions. It examines the tendency to form the spatial clusters. The global test indicates general spatial interactions between regions, while local tests give detailed results separately for each region. The global test detects spatial clustering of economically poor regions but is statistically insignificant as regards well-developed regions. Thus, the local tests are also applied. They indicate the occurrence of five spatial clusters and three outliers in Poland. There are three clusters of wealth. Their development is based on a diffusion impact of regional economic centres. The areas of eastern and north western Poland include clusters of poverty. The first one is impeded by the presense of three indiviual growth centres, while the second one is out of range of diffusion influence of bigger agglomerations.

Migrations form the size and structure of human resources in regions. For that reason they have not only a demographic but also a social and economic character. The existing research is often not enough due to a spatial, temporary and also a multidimensional character of this occurrence. The subject of this paper is to apply Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) concept for analysing the population migration phenomena considering the gravity model. This approach allows describing the social and economic situation in regions considering a set of correlated variables and it also allows determining its influence on migration flows. The first part of the article describes the construction and interpretation of the gravity model and the concept of the SEM model. In the second part the adopted research procedure and the research scope are presented. In the last part, the results of the investigation are explained. The strength and direction of the impact of the socio-economic development on the migration flows between subregions (NUTS 3) in Poland in the years 2008-2010 are discussed.
