Pollen is collected by worker bees from different plant species. This is a special product, rich in biologically active substances, that comprises food for larvae in bee colony. Chemically, it consists of approx. 250 chemical compounds, especially A, B, C, D and E vitamins, proteins, amino acids, fatty acids, as well as flavonoids, sterols, simple and complex sugars, and micro- and macronutrients such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron. Due to very diverse chemical composition and properties, pollen has been used for many years in natural medicine, but may be an allergen due to its composition. Standardized extracts of pollen positively affect the immune system, which consists of the activity of white blood cells and other forms of transmitters functioning in systemic blood and lymph. However the cross intake with drugs for these diseases shoud be carried out with precautions to avoid serious interactions

Nowadays a growing number of exotic reptiles are kept as pets. The aim of this study was to determine the species of parasites found in reptile patients of veterinary practices in Poland. Fecal samples obtained from 76 lizards, 15 turtles and 10 snakes were examined by flotation method and direct smear stained with Lugol’s iodine. In 63 samples (62.4%) the presence of parasite eggs and oocysts was revealed. Oocysts of Isospora spp. (from 33% to 100% of the samples, depending on the reptilian species) and Oxyurids eggs (10% to 75%) were predominant. In addition, isolated Eimeria spp. oocysts and Giardia intestinalis cysts were found, as well as Strongylus spp. and Hymenolepis spp. eggs. Pet reptiles are often infected with parasites, some of which are potentially dangerous to humans. A routine parasitological examination should be done in such animals.

Virtually all horses in Poland receive periodically deworming treatment. In the view of emerging anthelmintic resistance it is important to know the current parasite control practices used by Polish horse owners. In order to assess the situation and analyze it in terms of the risk of drug resistance, a questionnaire survey was forwarded to 300 horse establishments. The response rate was 49.6%. The average number of deworming treatments in adult horses was determined at 2.1. and 2.8 for youngstock per calendar year. The most commonly used drugs were ivermectin, pyrantel pamoate and moxidectin. Almost 73% of respondents indicated that they take into consideration the resistance of parasites. However, only 4,03% of the responders regularly send faecal samples from all horses for parasitological examination. In ca. 92% of cases the person administrating the drug guessed the weight of the horse by the visual evaluation. Generally, little attention was payed to pasture hygiene and prevention of parasitic infection. The responses indicate high level of awareness among horse owners of the need to control parasites. It also show the large involvement of veterinarians as a source of advice about deworming practices, so we concluded that the most appropriate way to achieve improvement would be implementation of further education programmes for veterinarians.

The results of studies conducted in 2006 revealed that mass red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) invasions cause somatic stress which may be responsible for the pathophysiological mechanism of decreased egg production, lower humoral immunity and higher mortality in layer hens. The aim of this study was to validate the above research results, to investigate whether in addition to somatic stress, red mite invasions cause psychogenic stress due to the activation of the sympatho-ad- renomedullar system, and to determine the level of stress resulting from red mite infestations in comparison with a short, 1.5 h period of acute immobilisation stress. The study investigated 36 HY-Line Brown layer hens divided into three groups: a non-infested control group, an experimental group infested with red mites and a non-infested experimental group subjected to acute immobilisation stress for 1.5 h. Blood samples were taken from all hens for the determination of the levels of corticosterone, adrenaline, noradrenaline, albumin, and α-, ß- and y-globulins. The results validated the previous reports on the occurrence of somatic stress and on a significant decrease in y-globulin levels (p < 0.01) in the group of birds infested with red mites, in comparison with the control group. Adrenaline levels in infested hens were indicative of psychogenic stress. Based on a comparison of hormonal indicators in all hen groups, the level of somatic stress resulting from red mite infestation can be classified as moderate, while the level of psychogenic stress can be interpreted as high. A significant drop in y-globulin levels in the blood of birds infested with red mites also shows that the invasion induces chronic stress which lowers the humoral immunity of hens.

Dermanyssus gallinae (poultry red mite) is a temporary parasitic mite which feeds on the blood of many species of domestic, wild and exotic birds. It can also attack mammals and humans. It is widely dispersed throughout the world and is a major problem in poultry production, mainly for laying hens. Under the suitable conditions of farms, the parasite population grows quickly and becomes difficult to control. Invasion of D. gallinae in chickens causes chronic stress, anxiety, irritability, increased cannibalism and mortality (6–8%), and a decrease in laying performance (approx. 15–20%). The possibility of the transmission of many pathogens can affect the spread of epidemiological risks in poultry. D. gallinae has exhibited resistance to adverse environmental conditions and eradication formulas. It is estimated that losses caused by the invasion of D. gallinae and eradication costs in the EU amount to about EUR 130 million annually. To combat D. gallinae, synthetic acaricides, products containing natural or synthetic silica, and the Thermo-kill method are commonly applied. Due to some limitations, alternative methods are still being sought, e.g. substances of natural origin (thuringiensin, spinosad, garlic extract and neem tree, geraniol, eugenol and citral) and vaccinations (subolesin and protein Bm86), as well as the biological control of natural enemies, or the introduction of a condensed light cycle. It seems that today the best results can be achieved by the application of the principles of IPM (Integrated Pest Management). One of the actions which should be jointly implemented by specialists from various fields is the construction of sheds to hinder the settlement of the parasite and to facilitate its liquidation.

Dermanyssus gallinae (poultry red mite) to okresowe pasożytnicze roztocze, które odżywia się krwią wielu gatunków ptaków domowych, dzikich oraz egzotycznych. Może atakować ssaki oraz ludzi. Jest szeroko rozpowszechniony na świecie i stanowi poważny problem w chowie i hodowli drobiu, głównie kur niosek. W warunkach ferm populacja pasożyta szybko narasta i jest trudna do zwalczenia. Inwazja D. gallinae u kury powoduje stan stresu chronicznego, niepokój, rozdrażnienie, wzrost kanibalizmu i liczby upadków (6–8%) oraz spadek nieśności (ok. 15–20%). Ze względu na możliwość transmisji wielu czynników chorobotwórczych może wpływać na szerzenie się zagrożeń epidemiologicznych wśród drobiu. Wykazano oporność D. gallinae na niekorzystne warunki środowiska oraz preparaty do jego zwalczania. Straty wywołane inwazją D. gallinae oraz koszty zwalczania w UE szacowane są na ok. 130 mln euro rocznie. Do zwalczania D. gallinae powszechnie stosowane są syntetyczne akarycydy, preparaty zawierające naturalną lub syntetyczną krzemionkę oraz metoda Thermo-Kill. Ze względu na pewne ograniczenia ciągle poszukuje się metod alternatywnych jak: substancje pochodzenia naturalnego (thuringiensyna, spinosad, ekstrakt z czosnku oraz drzewa neem, geraniol, eugenol i citral), a także szczepienia ochronne (subolesina i białko Bm86), jak również kontrolę biologiczną z wykorzystaniem naturalnych wrogów, czy wprowadzanie skróconego cyklu świetlnego. Wydaje się, że najlepsze rezultaty można osiągnąć stosując zasady IPM (Integrated Pest Management). Jednym z działań powinno być wspólne opracowanie przez specjalistów z wielu dziedzin konstrukcji kurników w celu utrudnienia zasiedlenia ich przez pasożyta i ułatwienie jego likwidacji.

The decline in wild animal habitats and the uncontrolled growth of their population make these animals come closer to human settlements. The aim of the study was to identify parasitic infections in wild animals in the selected area, and to specify the hazards they create for humans. In more than 66% of the analysed faecal samples from wild boar, hares, roe deer, deer and fallow deer various developmental forms of parasites were found. These included parasites dangerous for humans: Toxocara canis, Capillaria hepatica, Capillaria bovis, Trichuris suis, Trichuris ovis, Trichuris globulosus, Eimeria spp., and Trichostongylus spp. It is necessary to monitor parasitic diseases in wild animals as they can lead to the spread of parasites creating a hazard to humans, pets and livestock.

The aim of the study was to attempt an explanation of the physiopathological mechanism of decreased egg-laying and increased mortality in layers infested by mass red mite Dermanyssus gallinae invasions. The study was carried out on 20 cross-breed Lohman-Brown layers, divided into two groups: control (without parasites) and experimental (infested with red mite), taken from an industrial layer house which had been subjected to a mass invasion of the parasite. Birds were kept for 8 days under conditions eliminating chicken house stress factors except for the influence of red mite in the experimental group. Following this, they were slaughtered. Corticosterone levels, haematological indices (sedimentation rate, haematocrite, hemoglobin content, RBC, WBC, TBC, level of iron) and immunological indices (content of albumin and globulins a, b, g, and acute phase proteins ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, activity of lysozyme) were determined in the collected blood of the birds. The studies indicated a 2,5 fold increase in corticosterone levels and the tendency of a decrease in g-globulin in layers infested with red mite. It indicated the significance of stress mechanisms in decreasing the rate of egg laying and a higher mortality rate in chickens infested with Dermanyssus gallinae. The level of corticosterone may be a useful index for investigating the pathophysiological mechanisms of red mites on layers.
