The reserve mobilization was analysed in germinating seeds of faba bean (Vicia faba) exposed to treatment with a toxic cadmium concentration for 4 days. When the behaviours of three cultivars were compared with regard to the germination rate, the following order of sensitivity to cadmium was observed: Aguadulce and Luz de otoño showed 59 and 19% of inhibition from controls, respectively, while no effect was observed in the case of the local Féverole. The growth of embryo radicle was also affected in the same pattern. The differential vulnerability to Cd stress cannot be correlated to shortage in water supply of cotyledons. However, Cd-treated germinating seeds of the most sensitive cultivar (Aguadulce) showed restriction in starch mobilization and decrease in availability of soluble sugars and free amino acids. Moreover, glucose, fructose and amino acids were markedly leaked into the germination medium at the expense of the growing embryonic axis during exposure to Cd. These results provide an indication of the way in which cadmium might impair seed germination.

Background : Due to the increasing complexity of embedded systems, system designers use higher levels of abstraction in order to model and analyse system performances. STARSoC (Synthesis Tool for Adaptive and Reconfigurable System-on-Chip) is a tool for hardware/software co-design and the synthesis of System-on-Chip (SoC) starting from a high level model using the StreamsC textual language. The process behaviour is described in the C syntax language, whereas the architecture is defined with a small set of annotation directives. Therefore, these specifications bring together a large number of details which increase their complexity. However, graphical modelling is better suited for visualizing system architecture. Objectives : In this paper, the authors propose a graphical modelling editor for STARSoC design tool which allows models to be constructed quickly and legibly. Its intent is to assist designers in building their models in terms of the UML Component-like Diagram, and in the automatic translation of the drawn model into StreamsC specification. Methods : To achieve this goal, the Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) approach and well-known frameworks and tools on the Eclipse platform were employed. Conclusion : Our results indicate that the use of the Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) approach reduces the complexity of embedded system design, and it is sufficiently flexible to incorporate new design needs.

Exposure of chickpea seeds (Cicer arietinum L.) to cadmium stress for 6 days resulted in growth reduction and oxidative stress installation as exemplified by a strong accumulation of H₂O₂ and a disruption of enzymatic and non-enzymatic defense systems. The enrichment of the seed germinating medium with calcium and ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA) relieved the detrimental effect of Cd on root growth. This protective effect would be the result of (1) protein thiol protection, as evidenced by thioredoxin system activation, and of (2) the glutathione disulfide content decrease. The absence of corrective effect of effectors on glutathione redox state should be associated with the concomitant decrease in regeneration and consumption processes of reduced forms of glutathione, namely by glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities, respectively. Calcium and EGTA application led to oxidative stress alleviation as evidenced by H₂O₂ content decrease and the restoration of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities at a level similar to control roots. Moreover, the analysis of the transcriptional system relating to the up-cited enzymes revealed a decreased gene expression subsequent to the enrichment of germination medium with the effectors. The present research provided deeper insights into the mechanisms induced by Ca and EGTA to protect plant cell against Cd-induced oxidative injury.
