The undertakings connected with the restoration of the town centre of Piotrkow Trybunalski have been evoking much controversy for some time now. Thetown has played an exceptional role in Poland's history. From the 13th cent., the town hosted knights' conventions, and from the 15th cent, church synods of the Gniezno province. In the 15th—17th centuries it served as the Seym capital of the state. Various turns of events of the town in the period following the partitions caused its architectonic image to become obliterated and damaged. The expansion of cheap and serial forms in the 19th century endowed the old walls with eclectic elevations, making the town similar to other provincial towns of the Russian empire. In 1964 the Society of Friends of Piotrkow Trybunalski was established. It was then also that the intention of restoration of the Old Town came forth. Numerous difficulties (such as the lack of scientific studies) brought about a withdrawal from such an undertaking. In September 1986 the Social Committee for the Restoration of the Old Town in Piotrkow Trybunalski was created. Shortly after the Committee began its activity, two concepts of the town's restoration were formed. Supporters of the first concept felt that the town's future image should be the result of historical traditions. They postulated that following scientific investigaions of the historical structures, a selection and reconstruction be made of the most artistically and historically valuable structures transformed in the 19th cent. The supporters of the second concept aimed at the preservation of the 19th-century architectonic transformations (the preservation method). The author of the article has taken up a discussion with the advocates of the second concept, pointing to the threats to the historical values that are a part of the historical traditions. He stresses the need for interdisciplinary scientific studies, which can be the basis for preparing projects. Such studies cannot be substituted by occasional (fragmentary) consultations with even the best specialists. The already begun repairs of the Piotrkow houses are conducted with the aim of retaining the 19th-century eclectic architecture. The town centre area is expected to be tidied up in their course. However, is the image of the town, resored in the future, to be an example of only eclectic architecture? In the author's view, the image of the restored town should also include historical traditions, their role and rank as an important centre in Poland's history, instead of being solely an eclectic creation that would be an episode of not too much importance in the development of Piotrkow Trybunalski.

Since the late fifties, wages and working conditions for all major groups of employees in the socialized economy were determined by means of collective labour contracts. Such contracts were concluded between the main trade union board and the branch minister with an approval of the Minister of labour, Wages and Welfare Affairs secured earlier on. In practice, collective bargains were the main instrument appiled by the government in formulating the wage policy. In the present conditions of the economic reform both contents and methods of concluding collective bargains will undergo changes. Collective bargains will be concluded between direct employers and employees or their representatives within the framework of particular enterprises. There will have to be found now appropriate methods of collaboration between employees and employers, on the one hand, and the stale, on the other hand, implementing the economic policy for the benefit of the entire nation. That is why, studies have been undertaken on the model of collective bargain as concluded at the enterprise level. To this end, it was necessary to analyze and evaluate serveral collective bargains being in force till now. The article discusses results of the studies with regard to collective bargains concluded by power engineers, ship builders, drivers, geologists, academic teachers, and clerical employees.
