Sociology in Poland and in the world is not interested in the phenomenon of exam, despite the fact that it is a product of social interaction. It is possible that sociology appears to have no theoretical potential to examining this matter. In this paper I indicate several perspectives which authors relate to particular and diverse aspects of the exam. I confront it with a social genesis background of them and consider a possibility of connecting these perspectives to create a holistic theory of exam. I begin the review from Weber’s bureaucratical theory of exam and the concept of K. Marx. Next I recognize contemporary problems of R. Collins’s and R. Dore’s credentialism and P. Bourdieu’s reproductionism including newest trends of researches of the so-called hidden curriculum. As the last one, I examine a Foucault proposition of exam as oppression.
