In the article I explain certain aspects of the longstanding jurisdictional and property conflict between the Territorial Abbey of St. Martin on Pannonian Mountain (Hungary) and the Trnava Archdiocese (Slovak Republic). Based on an analysis of existing historical documents it is justified that the withdrawal of consent to the pastoral action of the Hungarian Benedictine monastic House in Komárno by Archbishop Ján Orosch was fully in accordance with canon law. The main reason was that the House in Komárno was not an independent house sui juris, and proper religious life was not practised there. This fact was confirmed by a decree of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in November 2015.

European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) is deemed to be one of political tools adjusting EU’s democratic deficit. Although the ECI has been largely analyzed from a theoretical point of view, the article presents an empirical snapshot of this participatory instrument viewed from the Slovak and Czech perspective. Using a series of research interviews, the author explains its strengths and weaknesses, as well as a possible path to move on in order to achieve more democratic, responsive and citizen-friendly Union.

The rapidly changing European political environment poses a big challenge not only to elected representatives but also to scholars. In the paper, the author elucidates the theoretical approaches to civic participation. Consequently, a theory of participatory democracy, which is heavily neglected in the Slovak academia, is presented through the prism of Carole Pateman’s, C.B. Macpherson’s and Benjamin Barber’s writings. Their ideas on civic engagement in public life appear to be noteworthy again, especially in the light of the changing conditions of democratic citizenship – particularly in regards to the EU-wide decline in voter turnout, increasing income inequality, downgrade of social solidarity and cooperation, growing intolerance or dissatisfaction with representative democracy.

In recent years, the term "human ecology" has become a shibboleth within the Catholic Social Doctrine (CSD). In magisterial jargon, it describes a broader understanding of ecological issues, as well as a specific approach to environmental protection. In the paper, the meanings of this term from the perspectives of the last three popes (St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis) are elucidated. The CSD is committed to such an approach to the environment which is based on the principles of ecological interdependence between terrestrial nature and human societies. Moreover, the CSD strongly emphasizes not only the vertical relationship between nature and humans, or human communities amongst themselves but also the horizontal relationship of the individual towards her/his Creator, i.e. God. Such an anthropocentrism is then rather weak when compared to one that completely subordinates nature to the total autonomy of man.
