At the end of the 16th century, the last female member of the Premonstratensian monastery in Nová Říše Anna Černická became involved in a sharp dispute with the newly appointed prior Šebestián Chotěbořský. Although it primarily concerned the method of the prior’s appointment and his competences, the distinct perception of monastic principles played and important role. Thus the two different types of monastic members faced each other, affected by the milieu and the period in which they originated.

The Early Modern imperial court represented a type of social environment where a number of conflicts could arise. The ceremonial also played an important role here. The traditional privilege of ceremonial precedence, which was based on the ideal system of a hierarchical order of dignitaries and the imperceptible gaps in the court ceremonial, gave many of the courtiers and foreign diplomats and representatives an opportunity to enforce their own social status to the detriment of others or on the contrary defend and protect them. An interesting example of a ceremonial conflict is the argument that took place during the ordination ceremony of the Archbishop of Prague Charles von Lamberg in 1607. Emperor Rudolf II actually initiated it as he refused to take part in this festive occasion and sent all the members of the Privy Council instead of himself. When the foreign diplomats of Spain, Venice and of the Holy See learned about it, they decided not to take part in the festivities either as they did not want to put their position at risk. The reason behind the the Emperor’s behaviour was an effort to express his symbolic disagreement with the activities of foreign diplomats, i.e. of the monarchs who sent them, as these activities conflicted with the Emperor’s plans in certain aspects.

The recently edited Nunciature reports from 1577–1581 present valuable information on the beginnings of Catholic confessionalism in the Czech Lands. Based on this, it can be documented that the individual points of the confessionalism programme of the Papal Nuncios at the Imperial Court were realised and were being enforced as early as the beginning of the reign of Rudolph II when the first Nuncios Malaspina and Santacroce resided permanently in Prague. An analysis of the reports makes it possible to identify the Emperor’s attitudes to the Curia plans, as well as to establish prominent agents of the pre-White Mountain Catholic confessionalism in the Czech Lands from amongst the ranks of the nobility and the clergy.

The Papacy extensively used services of its nuncios in enforcement of Counter-Reformation. It was not different in the Bohemian lands, particularly after 1583, when the nunciature resided on the Emperor’s court in Prague. The daring plans of the first nuncios residing in Prague, however, were replaced with a defensive policy under the pontificate of Pope Paul V (1605-1621). This is documented in a general directive to nuncio Antoni Caetani dated 1607. Thus in 1607-1609, Caetani concentrated his activities on defence of Catholic interests against Protestantism, interventions from secular powers and inner discipline in church institutions.
