Tea is a traditional beverage and originated in China. China is the largest producer of tea in the world. However, during the processing of tea, much tea stems and tea hairs are produced and usually discarded, which results in a large amount of waste. In this minireview, we mainly focused on reviewing the recent progress of chemical compositions and biological activities of tea stems and tea hairs by searching the CNKI, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases using “tea hairs and tea stems” as the key words, to provide the good reference for the comprehensive development and utilization of tea stems and tea hairs.

In this work, we obtained the water extracts of Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo, Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge, the leaves of Morus alba L., Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi, Panax notoginseng (Burk) F. H. Chen. Respectively. Then, we made a compound with these water extracts of Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo (13.33 %), Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge (29.17 %), the leaves of Morus alba L. (12.5 %), Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi (20.83 %), Panax notoginseng (Burk) F. H. Chen (6.95 %), accessory materials (17.22 %). Subsequently, we tested its in vivo hypoglycenic activity, and the results showed that this compound can reduce the blood sugar of the model mouse without toxicity.

In this work, the preparation process of the compounded tea based on Cyclocarya paliurus, Moringa leaves and lotus leaves was optimized by adopting a mixture design and using the total triterpenes, flavonoids, and polysaccharides as evaluation indicators, together with the sensory evaluation. The results showed that the optimized ratio of Cyclocarya paliurus, Moringa leaves and lotus leaves is 1.5:0.3:0.2 (W:W:W).

The essential oil from licorice seeds was prepared and investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), resulting in the identification of 47 beneficial components. The oil was found to be abundant in fatty acids: including linoleic acid (43.87%), palmitic acid (10.43%), oleic acid (4.51%), stearic acid (1.83%), and palmitoleic acid (1.25%). The oil’s physicochemical properties revealed an acid value of 0.066 mg/g, a peroxide value of 7.267 g/100g, an iodine value of 37.231 g/100g, and a saponification value of 186.823 mg/g, indicating that it can be regarded as a premium edible oil. The antioxidant activity of this oil showed that it has a antioxidant capacity with a free radical scavenging rate of up to 38.53% at a concentration of 15 mg/mL. The in vitro anticancer activities against lung cancer A549 cell lines and cervical cancer Hela cell lines showed that it inhibited the cancer cell lines with cell viability of 61% and 56% at a concentration of 100 mg/mL, respectively with a dose-depedent manner. This results indicate that the oil can be considered to be used as edible oil or potential applications in the field of food and medicine.

Objective: to prepare an active compound from the extracts of four traditional Chinese medicines that can reduce blood lipids. Methods: In this study, the active components were respectively extracted from four Chinese herbal medicines, namely, "Cymbopogon flexuosus", "Salvia miltiorrhiza", "Panax ginseng" and "Pueraria lobata", and then the active components were mixed in different proportions to prepare a compound. Subsequently, the in vivo lipid-lowering effects were investigated, and the results showed that the compound prepared in this study has the efficacy of lowering blood lipids. Conclusion: The "compound" prepared in this study can be developed as a functional food or beverage with auxiliary lipid-lowering efficacy.
