W artykule przedstawiono znaczenie przemysłu stalowego dla gospodarki światowej, europejskiej (UE) i krajowej. Znaczenie przemysłu stalowego dla gospodarek przedstawiono w układzie oddziaływania bezpośredniego i pośredniego. Praca powstała na podstawie danych statystycznych. Zestawiono m.in. wartość produkcji sprzedanej i jej udział w produkcji przemysłu ogółem, wartość dodaną sektora i jej udział w wartości dodanej przemysłu i PKB, a także poziom zatrudnienia i wydajność pracy. Większą szczegółowość prezentowanych danych zastosowano w odniesieniu do analizy znaczenia przemysłu stalowego w kraju, zestawiając dane statystyczne w układzie czasowym: 2004-2018. Przedstawiono także mnożniki oddziaływania pośredniego i indukowanego przemysłu stalowego na gospodarkę oraz znaczenie przemysłu stalowego dla innych użytkowników rynku w łańcuchu dostaw.

The article presents the importance of the steel industry for the global, european (EU) and national economy. The importance of the steel industry for economies is presented in the direct and indirect impact system. The study was based on statistical data. It compares, among others: the value of sold production and its share in the total production of industry, the added value of the sector and its share in the value added of industry and GDP, as well as the level of employment and labor productivity. The greater detail of the presented data was applied to the analysis of the importance of the steel industry in Poland, comparing statistical data in the time series: 2004-2018. The paper also presents the multipliers of indirect and induced impact of the steel industry on the economy and the importance of the steel industry for other market users in the supply chain.

Treść publikacji stanowią dane statystyczne o sytuacji w przemyśle stalowym na świecie w latach 2019-2020. Dane dotyczące produkcji stali i dynamiki zmian. Wprowadzono również informacje o obrotach handlowych w przemyśle stalowym. Na potrzeby publikacji korzystano z danych statystycznych dostępnych w publikacjach World Steel Association (w skrócie Worldsteel). Zestawienie produkcji stali w okresie dwóch lat miało na celu ukazanie tendencji zmian w wolumenie produkcji. Rok 2019 poprzedzał okres określany jako COVID-19. Sytuacja związana z kryzysem COVID-19 wpłynęła na wielkość produkcji stali w poszczególnych krajach.

The content of the publication consists of statistical data on the situation in the steel industry in the world in 2019-2020. Data on steel production and the dynamics of changes. Information on international trade in the steel industry was also introduced. For the publication, the statistical data available in the publications of the World Steel Association (abbreviated as Worldsteel) were used. The analysis of steel production over the period of two years was aimed at showing the trends of changes in the production volume. 2019 was preceded by a period known as COVID-19. The situation related to the COVID-19 crisis influenced the volume of steel production in individual countries.

Purpose: This publication presents selected problems in the field of measuring the intensity of steel usage in Poland. The main goal of this work is the presentation of some problems in sectoral analysis. Design/methodology/approach: The information contained in the publication are the result of the authors' own work in the subject area of the research and may differ from information obtained from literature study, but are important for other researchers of steel use intensity because they show some problems that must be taken into account and resolved during the analysis. Findings: At the stage of implementation of steel-usage absorption analysis, research problems arise related to the access and detail of statistical data on steel consumption by individual industry sectors in Poland, as well as input-output flows of steel products and maintained inventory levels. In order to increase the reliability of the analysis, researchers must perform a more complex test procedure regarding available data/estimated data to obtain the final structure of steel consumption. Accordingly, we discovered this to be: construction - 38.9%, metal goods - 25.5%, automotive - 13.5%, machinery - 11%, home appliances - 3.8%, transport equipment - 2.4% and others - 4.9%. Practical implications: The prepared structure of steel consumption can be used to directly measure actual steel usage intensity rather than by establishing this indirectly by using statistical data alone. Originality/value: The used methodology to describe the structure of steel consumption in Polish industry is new because there are no publications about it. Moreover, the list of research questions prepared by the authors can help other experts in analyzing steel use intensity.

Dane dotyczące produkcji stali w pierwszych miesiącach 2020 roku są szczególnie istotne dla badaczy rynku ze względu na kryzys gospodarczy spowodowany pandemią Covid-19. Na potrzeby publikacji korzystano z danych Hutniczej Izby Przemysłowo- Handlowej w Katowicach. Informacje zamieszczone w niniejszej publikacji mają przybliżyć czytelnikom sytuację w sektorze stalowym w pierwszych miesiącach kryzysu Covid-19 (określenie dla zastoju gospodarczego w okresie pandemii).

The content of the publication is statistical data on the situation in the steel industry in the first months of 2020. The publication presents data on the production of steel and steel products and apparent consumption in the analyzed period. Steel production data in the first months of 2020 are particularly important for market researchers due to the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. For the purposes of the publication, data from the Polish Steel Association in Katowice were used. The information contained in this publication is intended to reveal readers the situation in the steel sector in the first months of the Covid-19 crisis (term for economic stagnation during a pandemic).
