The article presents the results of the latest archaeological and architectural research conducted between 2010 and 2011 in the Bishops‘ castle in Wąbrzeźno. Many studies have focused on the issue of the beginning of construction and the development of Teutonic castles in the Chełmno region in the second half of the 13th century. Unfortunately, the studies are limited due to the insufficient number of historical, archaeological and architectural sources. Due to this reason the Department of Archaeology of Architecture in the Archaeological Institute of Nicholas Copernicus University in 2005 initiated a research programme exploring the castles in the Chełmno region, which has been continued to this day. From the beginning, the focus has been not only on gaining new data concerning the techniques used in constructing the castles, the chronology and spatial arrangements of these buildings, but also on verifying the claim that there had been some settlements in the area before the arrival of the Teutonic Knights. The article discusses the results of the research into the mobile sources, including the pottery dating from between the 14th and 18th centuries, building materials, tiles and relics of the castle, such as the southern wing and the retaining walls of the castle moat.
