On September 5, 1953, the first Faculty of Education was founded at the University of Warsaw in Poland, with a ministerial order. Thus, education was recognized a discipline worthy of university studies. The authorities of the newly created faculty (Dean, prof. Maria Żebrowska and associate dean Dr. Ryszard Wroczyński) faced a difficult task. It was necessary to develop a curriculum and programme of studies, taking into account the organisational conditions and requirements of the labour market (a model of a graduate), compliance of the learning content with the current ideology of the state, without losing sight of the essence of university education in the spirit determined by Wilhelm von Humboldt in the 19th century. Finding a solution meeting all these criteria was quite a daring enterprise. It is not surprising that, in search of the “golden rule”, the programmes of study and curricula underwent constant modifications and the changes were reported by department authorities in “The Pedagogical Quarterly”, which, according to the title, is described in this article.
