The article is devoted to the history of Russian Empire's presence in the Holy Land. It discusses the diplomatic efforts, which had been made by the tsarist Russia to gain influences in Palestine through such organisations as the Russian Spiritual Mission, the Palestine Committee and the Orthodox Palestine Society. The latter - according to its statutory objectives - organised the system of hospitals and schools for local people in Syria and Palestine. The best school graduates received grants to study in Russia where they had an opportunity to continue their education. Some of them never came back to their home country and spent the rest of their lives in Russia. Both Bandali al. Jawzy and Taufik Jubra'il Kazma, as well as Kulthum Bint Nasr Awda were related to many Russian (and then Soviet) academic institutions. The subsequent part of this article discusses the often uneasy life of those people in the new homeland and their scientific work.
