The epidemic of smallpox (variola vera) began in Wrocław in the summer of 1963. For the needs of the Polish Film Chronicle (PK F), a short, several-minute long reportage by Józef Bakalarski was created. It is the only evidence of past events recorded on a film tape. In addition, the reporter took a dozen or so photographs in the places where he was present with the camera, i.e. in the smallpox hospital in Szczodre, the isolation room in Psie Pole and the orphanage in Złotniki. Photos taken by Bakalarski are a great addition to a small collection stored in DŻS . Their uniqueness is due to the fact that they have not yet been made available to the general public. Bakalarski’s archive also contains documents from that period. The most valuable exhibits are a poster with an ordinance of 5 August 1963 on monitoring the fulfilment of the obligation to vaccinate against smallpox and authorization to enter the park of the smallpox hospital in Szczodre. Also worth mentioning are the scripts written by Bakalarski during his work on the documentary for the Polish Film Chronicle.
