In his introduction, the author emphasizes the importance of the coronation of the miraculous image of the Skępsk Madonna with a papal tiara in 1755, for the development of the Marian center in Skępe, as well as the transformation of the figure from a Gothic contrapposto into a Baroque ornamental design. This later became a decisive factor in the development of folk sacred sculpture of a wider scope. In this process, especially in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, an unquestionable role was played by six members of the Miłkowskis’ multi-generational sculpture workshop, living near Skępe, whose brief genesis is presented. The author, as the son of Józef, the last sculptor in the family, was researching and documenting the ancestral workshop and became particularly interested in a copy of the image of the Sculpture of Our Lady of Skępsk from the Ks. Dr. Władysław Łęga Museum in Grudziądz. The sculpture is dated with the initial R. 1841 M. and is the oldest known dated depiction of the Skępska Madonna. The author describes in detail this iconographic type, which he attributes to the authorship of Maciej Miłkowski (1819–1888). In addition, he presents the morphological and iconographic characteristics of the creative output of the sculpture’s author, along with his biographical note.
