The article presents the results of the research conducted on the facades of 15 Grudziadz tenement houses dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, establishing the original color scheme of these buildings. The research was carried out in connection with planned renovations. After the analysis of the results, it was found that among the facades of the Grudziądz tenement houses discussed in the article, those with a plastered or painted elevations in various shades of gray are dominant: grey, warm grey-beige, grey-olive. An ochre or beige color scheme is also common. Sometimes the architectural detail is highlighted with a lighter or darker shade or other color. The facades can also be red or yellow, resulting from the use of colored facing bricks for finishing. Window frames in shades of green, brown or cream are often used. Sometimes forged elements (balcony railings, grilles) in red, black or green are also introduced. It was also noticed that sporadically conducted color studies in other cities confirm the use of intense colors on the facades, such as red on the historical tenement house at Królowej Jadwigi 46 street (end of the 19th century) in Inowrocław, blue on a historical tenement house at ul. Łazienna 28 in Toruń (beginning of the 20th century), or orange, pink, green, violet and blue on the plastered parts of the facades of buildings in the cities of Warmia and Mazury. Research conducted in Wroclaw as part of the „100 Tenements” program indicates that the facades of 19th-century tenement buildings „built up color contrasts within the frontage or development quarter” (e.g., 6–12 Księcia Józefa Poniatowskiego 6–12, 12–28 Stanisława Staszica Square). A more individual and liberal treatment of details and colors of the façade can also be observed when Art Nouveau appeared. Among the facades of the Grudziądz tenement houses discussed in the article, eclectic- Art Nouveau decor and traditional colors were mostly used. The color scheme of the Grudziadz townhouses discussed in the article follows some of the recommendations of Schmidt’s pattern book from the late 18th century, mentioned in the article. The decor of the tenement houses in Grudziądz, along with the color program, did not differ from the stylistic trends occurring at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Prussian cities. Further research on the facades of other townhouses in the city, conducted in 2022, confirms the theses in the summary. Nevertheless, it is possible that other color arrangements may be present on facades that have not yet been surveyed.
