The article discusses the development of the monument protection and the organisation of conservation services in interwar Poland (1918–1939). Regaining independence was associated with the emergence of new administrative structures in the country, including those appointed to protect monuments. On October 31, 1918, the Decree of the Regency Council on the protection of monuments of art and culture entered into force. In the newly re-established state, attention was paid to the need to preserve national heritage. The decree specified which objects could be considered monuments. Care for monuments was entrusted to the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment, which appointed the conservators to carry out these activities. According to the decree, it was the owner who was responsible for the condition of the monument. From December 1918, the first conservators began to be appointed. In 1919, there were nine conservation districts, and in 1930 – eight. Since 1920, conservation offices have been included in the newly established provincial offices. On March 6, 1928, the Ordinance of the President of the Republic of Poland on the protection of monuments came into force. The key decision was to delegate many important powers of minister to the level of provincial conservators. The ordinance also indicated the division of the conservation authority into: the first instance, that is, the provincial authorities of the general administration, and the second instance, to which appeals could be directed, that is, the Minister of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment. The professional bodies of the provincial authorities of the general administration were the conservators appointed by the said minister. An important achievement was the creation in 1929 of the position of the General Conservator, with Jerzy Remer as the first holder of the office. This position existed until 1937.
