Translational lexicography for monolingual lexicography – on defining cooperation and collaboration

Abstrakty
The article deals with the meaning of the concepts of взаимодействие, сотрудничество and współdziałanie ‘collaboration’, współpraca ‘cooperation’ in the context of translation and lexicographic description. The author compares the definitions of these words from monolingual lexicographic sources (mainly published in the 20th century), as well as their equivalents from bilingual dictionaries. The major part of the article is constituted by the analysis of the data from texts related to diplomacy and foreign policy. The author comes to the conclusion that in the Russian texts the lexeme взаимодействие (współdziałanie ‘collaboration’) becomes similar to the lexeme сотрудничество (współpraca ‘cooperation’), even though the Russian lexicography to date has not treated them as words of similar meaning. This conclusion enables the author to propose an additional equivalent to the word взаимодействие. The crucial role in its interpretation is played by the context of use, as well as the presence of the word сотрудничество in the same text. The article concludes with the reflections on the significance of translational lexicography for improving monolingual lexicography.
