This article is devoted to the problem of ąuality of Polish official life tables. Thus, the methods used for calculating probabilities of death, smoothing, and con- structing life tables are investigated and evaluated. In the opinion of the authors, the approach applied to calculating life tables for Poland should be revised. Some suggestions on possible changes are madę in the text. A brief selection from the history of Dutch life tables, as a background for the suggestions, is presented as well. The authors selected the Netherlands because the Dutch statistical practice may be considered as representative for other European developed countries. In addition, the history of life table analysis in the Netherlands is well documented and subseąuent developments can be easily shown(original abstract)
