Chapter 1 identifies the challenges and changes that universities are facing in the turbulent world of higher education today, including reduction in Government funding, technology changes and a more customer driven market. Chapter 2 presents the discussion, focused on globalisation and internationalisation of the higher education sector in the UK. The conceptual framework draws upon the different concepts of globalisation/internationalisation and international strategy models that are relevant to higher education sector, supported by main characteristics of the service sector developed in late 1980s and early 1990s by researchers such as Lovelock (1983), Zeithaml (1985), Parasuraman & Gronroos (1994). The author concludes that there is no standard coherent strategy for internationalisation of existing management education in UK. however certain trends that are common to all HE institutions have been recognised. The importance of global branding, country of origin effect and cultural diversity is also highlighted. Levine (1980) presented a very interesting dimension of the process of internationalisation by comparing it with the process of innovation. His views and Knight's (1998) four approaches to globalisation will be used to support the arguments in the analytical part. Chapter 3 represents the analytical part of the work and offers the analysis of international strategies in chosen British universities. The research was carried out at four important British universities that were accessible to the author. In order to preserve anonymity we do not use full names of the researched universities. Chapter 4 integrates the theoretical framework into the empirical material derived from interviews with senior managers at British universities. This chapter answers the key research questions, and links back to the relevant academic theory. The author has used the narrative style in presentation of findings. The chapter also draws together the themes highlighted through the research and provides a useful forum to compare findings with theoretical provision and finally identifies some of the research limitations. Chapter 5 draws conclusions from the study and suggest a range of recommendations to the EU universities regarding internationalisation and globalisation of their strategies. An important part of this chapter is an aggregate table that features step by step guidelines for EU universities how to develop their international activities and outlines recommendations for the future research.
