An increasing influence of the internet in everyday life poses a challenge for the sociological theory of trust and social capital. These classic problems are currently being subject to tests based on novel data on participation in social networks or in discussion groups operating on the web. Are the communication capabilities offered by new technologies associated with the growth or decline of interpersonal contacts and participation in social groups. Is there a relationship between the internet use and political commitment? The article is devoted to presenting the results of selected Western social research on the influence of the internet on social capital.(original abstract)
