The subject of the article are family budgets in 1970 in the District of Kielce. At the beginning factors influencing significantly the size and structure of individual consumption in the households have been discussed. The role of the woman not employed professionally but performing a number of chores at home has been stressed. Then, after characterizing some criteria of grouping the households an analysis of the family budgets has been made. The starting-point of this analysis are contained in the Statistical Yearbook of Kielce region for the year 1971. The analysis shows that families of the lowest income consist of many persons white families of the highest income are small. The living standard is closely connected with the professional activity of the members of the family. It be seen that with the increase of the number of persons in the family the average number of persons dependent on the working members of the family also increases. Earned income is the main position of the family budgets. Its basic source are earnings of the head of the family. The per cent participation in the earnings of the head of the family varies, however, among particular living standard groups. In principle the higher the living standard the lower the participation of the head of the family in the overall income from work. Expenditures in the family budgets are characterized by relatively high sums spent on food (about 50% of the overall average expenditures). The analysis of particular living standard groups fully varifies the correctness of Engel's law because the increase of income is always accompanied by the decrease of sums spent on foodstuff. On the whole, one can state that, as far as family budgets are concerned, certain regularities which occur in the District of Kielce are characteristic of the whole country. (original abstract)
