Przedstawiono aspekt historyczny stosunków EFTA-EWG. Przybliżono koncepcję Europejskiego Obszaru Gospodarczego. Omówiono stosunki między EFTA a krajami Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej.

This article addresses the impact of the Eastern Enlargement of the European Communities, which took place in 2004, on the operation of the European Economic Area. In the first part of the article, the author looks at the history of relations between the European Economic Community and EFTA. He presents the genesis of both these groupings, changes in their membership that took place during the analysed period, and the agreements signed between the European Economic Community and member-states of EFTA. In the second part of the article, the author describes the main features of the European Economic Area (EEA). He presents the processes that led to the emergence in the mid-1980s of the idea of creating the EEA, describes the course of the negotiations to establish the EEA, including the most problematic issues that were faced, and sets out the main provisions of the Treaty to establish the European Economic Area in 1992. The third part of the article is devoted to the issue of relations between EFTA countries and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe hoping to accede to the European Communities as well as the problem of the expansion of the European Economic Area due to the Eastern Enlargement of the European Union. The author presents here the development of cooperation between the above-mentioned countries, characterises the procedure for expanding the European Economic Area, and also analyses the course and results of negotiations in regard to expansion of the EEA conducted by European Union countries, EEA-EFTA countries, and the candidate countries of Central and Eastern Europe hoping to join the European Union in 2003-2004.
