The dynamics of national identity changes in Central and Eastern European countries has for a long time interested political scientists in Western Europe and the USA. We often hear arguments formulated there (for example within, so called, transitology) claiming the period after the II World War in these countries a time, during which the processes of shaping national identities were totally blocked. Thus the "democracy explosion" in 1989/1990 also caused an extremely fast development of identity revindication, mainly of national identities. This is how the growth of nationalistic, often even xenophobic attitudes, in all countries of this part of the continent is explained. The contents of this article is an argument with this simplified thesis by showing that during the period between the end of the II World War and 1989/1990 in Central and Eastern European countries national identity formation processes also took place, and that current changes are largely the effect, or social answer to those changes in national identity from the post-war years. In such a general portrayal of changes, the author proposes taking into account a few important factors which occur in different ways in different countries. Firstly, differentiating between community identities built on common traditions, and political identity built on national unity. Secondly, the author points out the necessity of taking into account political opposition when creating a model of national identity. Thirdly, he points out to what degree in an official model of national identity elements of specific class, strata, or even important social groups have been reflected. At the end, the author suggests a presumption in the form of a hypothesis, that in the countries mentioned, we will be dealing with a decentralisation of varied geometry (some regions will have a greater, some less important share in the forming of national identities), which will eventually lead to the development of a mosaic identity built from representatives of cultural elements characteristic for various groups.(original abstract)
