Abstrakty
The aim of this article was to introduce the reader to the concept of intelligent agent and multi-agent systems. The types of agent frameworks and architectures that are currently being used have been detailed. We have emphasized those agent features which make agents intelligent: a knowledge base, reasoning and learning capabilities. A general framework of agent systems has been given in broad outline. A number of software tools that allow a user to develop software systems as agents or groups of cooperating agents have been also presented. To illustrate the concept of multi-agent systems four applications have been described: a multi-agent system in the area of providing financial services, FAIS system which evaluates reports of large cash transactions to identify potential laundering activities, a system for portfolio management, and finally a decision-support system for online stock trading.
