The visual arts competition accompanying European Heritage Days 2007, held under the slogan 'People of the Road, Travelers, Pilgrims, Wanderers', was organised by the National Heritage Board of Poland and the Centre for Citizenship Education. The intention of the event was predominantly to stir children's interest in culture, its roots and material and spiritual heritage, by resorting to artistic activity. The prizes were one- and two-day excursions to a chosen site in Poland, The organisers wished to contribute to the cultural education of the youngest participants by offering them an opportunity to tour localities which comprise the most valuable evidence of the cultural heritage of our country and recommended that the winners specially visit monuments included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The names and works of winners have been already published in 'Ochrona Zabytków' and on the Internet sites of the European Heritage Days 2007 and the Centre for Citizenship Education < www.ceo.org.pl>. Furthermore, the organisers maintain contact with the winners who are supplying them with accounts of their tours. At the end of April 2008 four winners - Kacper Jung, Stanislaw Zan, Gabriela Zurek and Katarzyna Sereda, pupils of Primary School no.1 in Bilgoraj, set off, together with their adult companions, for a two-day trip to Cracow to see the complex of historical monuments on Wawel Hill and the Seweryn Udziela Ethnographic Museum. The winners also showed great interest in the magnificent Teutonic Order castle in Malbork. An additional award founded by the periodical 'Zabytki. Heritage' enabled pupils from Primary School in Zlojec, accompanied by their teacher, Malgorzata Magryta, to tour the castles in Gniew and Malbork. A group of winners also visited the Salt Mine in Wieliczka, which in 1978 was added to the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List among the first 12 sites in the whole world. The Renaissance town of Zamosc was the destination of winners in the category of the film pupils of the Cardinal S. Wyszynski Secondary School in Aleksandrow, accompanied by their teachers. Considerable interest in the competition and especially its remarkable outcome and the satisfaction of the winners are sufficient confirmation of the rank of such undertakings. .
