Assessment of the influence of precipitation as a factor reducting turnip moth (Agrotis segetum) larvae population in sustainable carrot farming

Abstrakty
In 2008, the authors observed a carrot crop infestation by Agrotis segetum and its important influence on root yield. A significantly less pest occurrence and harmfulness were recorded in 2009 – the year characterized by frequent rainfall, although the number of caught males was threefold higher as compared to the dry year 2008. Compared the results of 2-year studies with literature data it was found that the pest occurrence was strictly related to the frequency of rainfall during the vegetative season. The significance of presented results was statistically confirmed by the analysis of General Regression Model (GRM). On the basis of obtained results the following conclusion can be drawn, that frequent sprinkling as a factor reducing Agrostis segetum population may be recommended as a valuable supplement to the IPM, especially in case of carrot crops cultivated in organic farming system.
