HUNGARIAN SLAVS - SOUTHERN SLAVS AND SLOVAKS - AND THE SLAVIC CONGRESS IN JUNE 1848
Języki publikacji
Abstrakty
The contribution analyses the activities of Hungarian Slavs in the revolutionary year 1848. It focuses on their initiatives resulting in the convocation of the Slavic Congress. It also depicts their further activities in the period following the interruption of the congress. The Slavic Congress is described as the most important co-ordinating event of Slavs in the Hapsburg Monarchy; the contribution emphasises the share of the Slovak representatives. The second part of the contribution points out the activities of the Slovak representatives in Zagreb and Belgrade, which helped to obtain financial and military resources for the Slovak uprising launched in co-ordination with the duke Jelacic in September 1848. The uprising helped Jelacic primarily by the fact that it engaged more than 20,000 Hungarian soldiers. However, Serbian and Southern-Slavic support in general was substantial for the Slovak uprising in September 1848 in which Croats and Slovenians participated as volunteers besides Czechs and Slovaks. Despite the support, the uprising did not achieve any significant success. The study also points out the importance of Austro-Slavism and Hungarian Slavism and proves that the latter concept produced no results due to the unyieldingness of the Hungarian revolutionary government in the issue of national coequality.
