Poznań castle – located in the capitol of historical Wielkopolska Province, is one of the most important residences of Polish Kingdom rulers, reconstructed to a great extent through the ages. The knowledge of the architecture of this object at its splendor times, that is namely since the half of the 14th century till the end of the 15th century, is practically very small, and that is despite conducting archaeological researches. According to the results of archeological excavations it may be stated that by the end of the 13th century or at the beginning of the 14th century the first, brick castle creation was erected, with a keep (for living purposes at that time) and adjacent wall sections. This investment, however – probably due to political uncertainty – wasn’t finished. The continuation of castle erection should be associated with king Władysław the Elbow ruling, and mostly with his son and heir, king Kazimierz the Great, as well as with king Władysław Jagiełło. During that period the construction of circular defense walls surrounding castrum (of total area of 3000m2) was finished, and most probably the great gothic palace filling the western part of the foundation was erected. During archaeological researches walls connected with that building were discovered. One of them may be interpreted as a remain of slope-based projection, positioned ahead the building elevation. On the basis of analogy – among others the castle in near Uniejów, as well as in Namysłów in Silesia region – one can expect that this object contained a representative entrance in lower part, and in the upper one a polygonally closed chapel. The second of the walls positioned ahead of the palace could be a remain of brick partition dividing the residential (northern) part of the castle from its utility zone (southern); it was at the same time ordering the space and strengthening the defense capabilities of the royal seat. In the article there was conducted a comparison analysis of castle architecture against other foundations on Polish grounds. For the article’s sake there was created the first hypothetical attempt of the reconstruction of the castle in its mature, late medieval form (of the 1st half of the 15th century). The vision of defense residence presented in this attempt is mostly hypothetical though, it requires archaeological excavations continuation, especially due to the fact that on this area there are conducted works on the construction of the castle replica, however, according to its later creation, of the 14th century.
