The article aims to analyze the philosophy of Richard Rorty in the connection with the concept of multiculturalism (and vice versa: to see how Rorty’s philosophy is suitable for conceptualization of multiculturalism issues) in order to understand how contemporary philosophy – grounded in the global changes that have taken place in the world at the turn of the 20th and 21st century – can respond to current political challenges. The concept of multiculturalism is understood both as a view and as a policy. The fundamental perspective of the analysis is the distinction between private and public sphere. This classic liberal solution seems to allow a capture of a key tension of the subject. The first part is dedicated to the elements of Rortian epistemology, his philosophy of language and his view on human nature. These issues lead directly to the problems of the Rortian social philosophy which the second part of the text is focused on. The main conclusion is based on the fact that the elements of multiculturalism understood as a view make the multiculturalism policy impossible. In this sense Rortian social philosophy shares with the concept of multiculturalism a stigma called here an incommensurability logic.
