Niniejszy artykuł analizuje tworzenie napisów jako formy tłumaczenia, a dokładniej ograniczenia audiowizualne, które są nakładane na proces tworzenia napisów. Po omówieniu niektórych najważniejszych ograniczeń technicznych środowiska audiowizualnego przedstawiono taksonomię strategii tłumaczeniowych, jakie tłumacz napisów może wykorzystywać, aby skutecznie poradzić sobie z wyżej wymienionymi ograniczeniami. Taksonomia została następnie umieszczona w kontekście niderlandzko-czeskim i zilustrowana przykładami na podstawie dwóch filmów: niderlandzkiego filmu pt. „Czarna Księga” (Zwartboek) z czeskimi napisami oraz czeskiego filmu pt. „Obsługiwałem angielskiego króla” (Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále) z napisami niderlandzkimi. Przykłady te umożliwiają wgląd w praktyczne zastosowanie wspomnianych strategii tłumaczeniowych i pokazują, w jaki sposób tłumacz napisów poradził sobie z ograniczeniami środowiska audiowizualnego.

This contribution explores subtitling as a form of translation, and more specifically the constraints of the audiovisual environment, which are imposed on the process of subtitling. After a discussion of some of the most important technical constraints of the audiovisual environment a taxonomy of translation strategies is presented, which the translator-subtitler can apply to effectively deal with the aforementioned constraints. This taxonomy is subsequently placed in a Czech-Dutch context and illustrated by examples from the Czech subtitled edition of the Dutch movie Zwartboek and the Dutch subtitled version of the Czech movie Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále (I served the king of England). These examples will provide insight in the practical application of the mentioned translation strategies and show in which way the translator-subtitler has dealt with the constraints of the audiovisual environment.

Deze bijdrage onderzoekt ondertiteling als een vertaalvorm, en meer specifiek de beperkingen van de audiovisuele omgeving die worden opgelegd aan het ondertitelingsproces. Na bespreking van een aantal van de belangrijkste technische beperkingen van de audiovisuele omgeving wordt een taxonomie van vertaalstrategieën gepresenteerd die de vertaler-ondertitelaar kan toepassen om effectief om te gaan met de genoemde beperkingen. Deze taxonomie wordt vervolgens in een Tsjechisch-Nederlandse context geplaatst en geïllustreerd met voorbeelden uit de Tsjechisch ondertitelde editie van de Nederlandse film Zwartboek en de Nederlands ondertitelde versie van de Tsjechische film Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále (Ik diende de koning van Engeland). Deze voorbeelden zullen inzicht geven in de praktische toepassing van de genoemde vertaalstrategieën en aantonen op welke manier de vertaler-ondertitelaar met de beperkingen van de audiovisuele omgeving is omgegaan.
