In the article means to separate distinctly characteristic periods in the description of development of literary Upper Sorbian are offered, aprocess which can be categorized as periodization. The proposition is of methodological character: it is intended to facilitate the perception of material by the reader, and additionally emphasize the ways in which linguistic or extralinguistic factors influence language development. The author based this attempt at providing adivision of literary Upper Sorbian into periods on the model of period division in the evolution of Polish literary language, considering both the similarities and differences in the process of development of both languages concerned.
