This article traces the history of the Polish Historical and Literary Society and the Polish Library in Paris. Following the failed November Uprising, a sizeable group of Polish patriots evacuated Poland and settled in France. In an effort to oppose, beyond the borders of Poland, the processes of Russification in the Kingdom of Poland, as well as the Germanization in the territories under Prussian occupation, the group established the Literary Society in 1832, which after merging with the previously existing Historical Society and the Department of Statistics, accepted in the February of 1854, the current operating name of the Historical and Literary Society. The society's first president was Prince Adam Czartoryski and its vice-president was Adam Mickiewicz. The founding act of the Polish Library was signed on the 24th of November in 1838.
