Positive and Negative Aspects of Being an Only Child in the Opinion of Young People

Abstrakty
Celem artykułu jest prezentacja opinii młodzieży na temat dzieci jedynych w rodzinie. Jak młodzież postrzega jedynaków? Jakie pozytywne i negatywne strony jedynactwa dostrzega? Czy powielane są funkcjonujące stereotypy dotyczące jedynaków? Analiza danych pokazuje, że jedynacy posiadają zarówno pozytywne, jak i negatywne cechy, które potwierdzają społeczne stereotypy. Jedynacy chcą dominować, chcą sprawiać dobre wrażenie, a także nie lubią się dzielić z innymi. Z drugiej strony, otrzymane dane podważają obiegowe opinie odnośnie dzieci jedynych. Pokazują, że jedynacy nie są egoistami i wykazują się wysokim poziomem socjalizacji. Zatem, bycie jedynym dzieckiem w rodzinie nie kojarzy się badanej młodzieży tylko z negatywnymi aspektami.
The main purpose of the article is to give an overview of being an only child in the family in the opinion of young people. How do they perceive the only child? Do they notice positive and negative aspects of being the only child? Does a stereotypical view of the only child still exist in people’s minds? The analysis of the data shows that only children have positive as well as negative characteristics which confirm social stereotypes. The only children are dominating, anxious to make a good impression and do not like sharing and helping others. On the other hand, some of the data undermine the public opinion about being the only child. The results show that they have non-egoistic characteristic and they possess a high level of socialization. Consequently, being the only child is not associated only with negative aspects.
