Sixteenth-Eighteenth-Century Mausolea and Sepulchral Chapels in Villages of the Legnica Voivodeship

Abstrakty
Mausolea and sepulchral chapels are to be fund in about 50 villages and several towns of the Legnica voivodeship; in certain cases, a number of these objects are located in a single cemetery. The oldest examples originate from the sixteenth century while the most numerous ones come from the nineteenth century. The modest sixteenth-century objects were built on a plan of a square or rectangle, and are frequently connected with the interior of the church. During the seventeenth century mausolea were continued to be erected as buildings closely adjoining churches, chiefly on the plan of a square. In two such object, the centre of the interior contains a pillar which supportsa cross vault. The distinctive mausoleum in Miłoradzice has walls fragmented by pilasters, with an interior on the plan of an octagon, topped with a cloister vault. Semi-circular niches in the shorter walls and ceiling were embellished with stucco decorations in the form of allegorical figures, angels, acanthus leaves and emblematic paintings. The eighteenth-century objects include several examples of small Baroque architecture. The elevations are fragmented by pilasters and the design of the windows is highly original. The interiors employed pilasters, and semi-circular and vertical niches; the walls were decorated with polychromy. Crowning with a dome or a cloister vault with a lantern completes the composition of those, as a rule, central premises. The mausolea and sepulchral chapels contain the largest number of full figure and inscription epitaphs, architectonic tombstones as well as several Baroque, lavishly decorated sandstone sarcophagi. The majority of the church mausolea and sepulchral chapels are in a satisfactory state, but the freestanding objects require repair.
