Not much is known on the experiences of older persons who received services following an experience of mistreatment. This paper aims to expose such experiences. The results are extracted form a large study on specialized non-for-profit agencies (NFPA) in the field of mistreatment of older persons in Canada. Eleven in-depth interviews were conducted with older persons who experienced mistreatment and received services from NFPA. Based on the sociological theory of experience (Dubet), a thematic analysis followed by a typological analysis lead us to identify 4 types of experiences of accompaniment: beneficial accompaniment, positive accompaniment, threatening accompaniment and discontinuous accompaniment. The results reveal that two main factors influence the experience of accompaniment: the way older persons perceive the idea of seeking help and the nature of interactions with practitioners or volunteer staff from the NFPA. This paper ends by a series of suggestions for practice and research.
