In the seventies of the 19th century refractory schist was discovered at Nowa Ruda. In 1879 it began to be excavated, treated and then processed. Until 1980 the roasting plant of refractory schist at Nowa Ruda had been the only object of this kind in Poland and one of few in the world. In 1981, in view of the planned closing-down of the plant its historic study was made. It described technical installations, buildings and equipment of the plant that had historic values and by documenting technologies that had been in use over 100 years a general concept of the conservators' protection of historic structures of the roasting plant was drawn. Main structures come from the end of the 19th cent., others — from the onset and the thirties of the 20th century. They should be regarded as prototypical units. Technological processes used in 1880—1980 at Nowa Ruda also constitute a document of the development of techniques and technologies of schist treating and processing. In the author’s opinion there is neither possibility nor need to protect the entire plant. It has been thus suggested that the protection should cover archaic relics of one- step technology of schist processing and treatment, part of the original complex shaft furnaces, a conveying platform, part of the system of vehicular transportation, mine hutches and perhaps some other units. In view of the kind and functions that exist at Nowa Ruda it is possible to have there in situ protection. This may bring about increasing the attractiveness of the museum, the more so that it may be possible to resume an old technological process in at least one furnace. The battery of shaft furnaces has been well preserved with regard to their form and functions at the end of the 19th century, which would link together all structures that go to make an open-air museum of engineering at Nowa Ruda.
